Sony firmware 2.40 bricks PS3
Unlucky for some
MAKER OF EXPLODING batteries, Sony has had to pull its firmware 2.40 upgrade for the PS3 after complaints that it was turning the consoles into expensive bricks.
Complaints flooded in after punters moaned of multiple problems with the upgrade. The most dramatic was that the console seemed to get itself stuck while booting and could not get past its funky 'wave' background display.
The problem was so annoying and terminal that the only way it could be cured was by formatting the hard drive, which is a risky business.
Sony sheepishly admitted the fault and swiftly pulled the upgrade. Another version has been released. The reason that punters were queuing up for the upgrade was that it has some natty new features such as in-game XMB access along with a new trophy system for player awards.
Sony claims that the faulty upgrade only hurt a small number of users. So that's alright then. µ

What did you expect...
Bet you 20$ they put an extra extra large dose of DRM's inside 2.40.As opposed to the competition...
...that will brick itself when you turn it on. No firmware updates needed.. just use it and it self-destructs.Still, both the PS3 and 360 are overpriced with a lack of compelling titles.
It effected me
I was one of the ones effected by this and initially contacted sony customer services who were going to replace the entire unit with a 'refurbished' one. (The warranty print covers that scenario) Instead I bought a new bigger hard drive and put it in the machine (Which does not void the warranty - And double thumbs up to sony for that.) A simple operation and now I have a much bigger hard drive rather than the 40Gig I had before. The only downside is the loss of my save games but thats why we should do backups.Research?
Nick, you need to do more research. Starting up a PS3 would be a start.Sony have not released a new version of the 2.40 firmware.
Sony pulled the firmware within hours of it's release because the recognized that there were issues. It's not like they left if for a day or two. At which point you'd no doubt be bleating that they stuck their head in the sand.
The problem looks to be some compatibility issue with certain HDDs in particular circumstances. It's not a specific batch of PS3s or anything like that. You can resolve the issue with a reformat of the HDD. Not exactly desirable, but not the end of the earth either. Lesson? Backup your game saves before applying firmware updates.
@AJ SP3 and 360 lack compelling titles? what's up, are you still playing on your Dreamcast? Gears of War and Bioshock, Warhawk, Metal Gear Solid, Burnout Paradise, COD4, GTA4. Those aren't compelling? Try the latest Soul Calibur coming at the end of July, better yet?
Dammit Gordon
I'm going to have to dig mine out now to play some Rez and Crazy Taxi :-}Nick needs to do more research?
Classic, absolutely wonderful. This is Nick actually stopped just cutting and pasting, and moved on to excising all the useful detail in whatever he just pinched, reducing it to near gibberish peppered with trite smugness. Information content.. zilch.Still, it's nice to see that he has recently had some help with apostrophes and homophones (or the inq is employing literate subs now.. sub *editors*, do behave).
Dreamcast? Heck Yes!
Gordon,Yes I am still playing on my Dreamcast, it's a great system =) There is no other version of Ms Pacman quite as good as the Dreamcast version.
What I should have said is that the 360 and PS3 lack compelling and exclusive titles. Cod4 was great , I have it on pc where shooters belong. I also have Gears of War on pc and Bioshock on pc (which was a disappointment and cannot touch the excellent System Shock 2).
I don't have anything against the new consoles, just that they don't have enough exclusive and compelling titles yet.
For Craig
Stick your old HDD in an external casing, you can then port all your game saves over.no problems here
i had no problems with the update. but then again not many people water cool their ps3 or install a 320gig hdd in it....Hahaha
A water cooled PS3 now thats just a waste of money if the guy isn't just lieing. If your ps3 gets any warmer than the heat that comes off your TV you might have a defective unit. I have original 60GB and even when playing heavy duty games it doesn't get hot at all. Most people do have over 200gb hard drives now also or at least the people I know with PS3s
