Media streaming coming soon to an Iphone near you
Patent hints at future
A PATENT RECENTLY FILED by Apple and unearthed by the folks at Apple Insider suggests that future iterations of the Iphone and Ipod Touch firmwear could enable media streaming.
Current restrictions in storage capacity mean that most users have to cherry-pick their favourite tunes and videos to put on their portable devices. But the proposed method would mean that the device would only contain metadata, about one per cent of the file's size, and stream the remaining content over the Interweb.
So that frustratingly small 8GB Iphone you just purchased could soon be a multi-terabyte multimedia monster.
It would also put an end to the curse of the four-hour backup which many Iphone users have been wailing about since the release of the Iphone 2.X firmware. µ

Big Whoop
My PSP can do that already. What's the big deal?Patents schmatent
Wonder whatever happened to the idea that a patent was a development or device that was not obvious to an expert in the field. Sheesh.Late to the party
Can't that already be done on the iPhone with TVersity media server?Iphone already does this?
The iphone and ipod touch have been able to do this for some time. I use the excellent Orb service on my computer, and can stream my media (as well as TV from a TV tuner) onto my (jailbroken) ipod touch, my Sony Ericsson phone and my laptop, over the local network or the internet. Nothing new here...
