More Apple iPhone controls revealed

Switch off at a distance

APPLE fanboys will be relieved that the incredible shrinking profit Messiah Steve Jobs can remotely control their expensive Iphone and turn off any software he does not think they should have.

For Apple fanboys, who know that they are weak and they might stray from the true Apple roadmap, are one of he few that will be reassured to know that the Cappuccino outfit has installed a kill switch under the bonnet.

We already reported on how Apple could control the iphone applications here but it looks like the pastel-flavoured toymaker has more than one way of killing an Igadget at a distance.

Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Saint Steve said Apple needs a kill switch in case it inadvertently allows a malicious program to be distributed to Iphones through the App Store.

His Hopefulness said that hopefully Apple would never have to pull that lever. But, he said, it would be irresponsible not to have a lever like that to pull.

While no other manufacturer feels the need to have that much power over a client's machine, the mysterious kill switch does make an obvious attack vector to take down the Iphone.

Fortunately no one has yet found the kill switch within the Iphone which Steve is referring to. When they do, we suggest it will make St Steve's desire to control his users look a bit silly, again. µ

Shouldn't you give it a rest

After all of your hard work trying to smear and distort facts to further your Apple campaign, don't you deserve a break.

I'm thinking you could automate your articles (perhaps even via an iPhone?). Apple sucks because [insert latest google search here] because of Steve Jobs.

Seriously - does it make you feel better to write these pieces, is it some sort of coping mechanism? I don't get the hatred you seem to have for Apple - it's just a company. Just don't buy their products and move on. If Apple is as bad and evil as you suggest, the market will decide and Apple. With what you describe in terms of their arrogance, lack of good products and disregard they will clearly go out of business shorty, no?

Better yet, put your money where your mouth is and go out and short some Apple stock - clearly you have figured things out much faster and better than every other mere mortal and you should profit from it, no?

Did you read the link?

"We already reported on how Apple could control the iphone applications here but it looks like the pastel-flavoured toymaker has more than one way of killing an Igadget at a distance."

Are you assuming the readers here are too lazy to read the WSJ link or are you just unable to read yourself. Here is the quote from WSJ:

"Note that this does not necessarily mean that the Core Location blacklist discovered by Jonathan Zdziarski is the “lever” that Jobs refers to; there could very well be a separate mechanism elsewhere in the iPhone’s software. "

So from this you conclude 'it looks like there is more then one lever'? You hope there is? You want there to be more than one to make a good story? Or you needed to differentiate the story from the previous one so you can spit out more of your propaganda? You hope people are too lazy to click on the link? Or do you just believe truth should not get in the way of a good story or yet another Apple rant?

Paul Hales - Please stop this crap Nick is turning out, it is one thing to write opinion pieces masquerading as an actual story, but now Nick is just making some stuff up so he can resurrect a story that someone else on the INQ beat him too. Does anyone on this site have any integrity left or do you need to change the banner to "FRICTION ONLY"

Oh and Nick you might want to actually proofread your story in your haste to churn out as much as you can. You need to do more than just spellcheck, 'HE' = 'THE'?

liberty? are you mad?!

after spending all that money, do you really think you are entitled to control it as if it were your own?!

the next model is going to have a device that inserts a control chip into your brain while you sleep so you can become one of apple's many mindless subordinate drones

wtf?

Wow. I'm not even sure parts of this dribble even makes sense. The messiah reference is a little odd.

I pose this question, "What is the point of this mindless explosive diarrhea of the mouth?"

One negative part of every and anyone being able to post whatever they think is news worthy. Ugh!

A bit unfair

Would the reason for the kill switch not be because of people cracking software and things like that.
An i phone is a bit too much internet for me and I think they are a waste of money.
All I know about Apple is when you buy a computer it works and they sort out any problems (most of the time).
So I suggest that next time you write something try and be a bit more objective.
Maybe that way you won't sound so bitter

Oh boy...

I'm not a tremendous Apple fan, but yeah, way too biased. I'm not a frequent reader here, but is this just a blog or a real source of info? The tone suggests a simple blogger hacked this site.

Also, I agree the type-o wrecks the credibility....after the "he" = "the" (which I admittedly make myself), it seems dude mistook "Cappuccino" for "Cupertino"...nice self editing. I can let the occasional spelling error slide (like the "he" example), but "Cappuccino? jesus...

Difference?

link reader please explain the how WSJ:"there could very well be a separate mechanism elsewhere in the iPhone’s software. " differs from INQ:"it looks like the pastel-flavoured toymaker has more than one way of killing an Igadget at a distance."
Looks like doesnt mean there is. Basically he's wrote in his own words the same thing as the WSJ then gave his opinion on Apple having the ability to do something like this, i dont see the problem with that.

"writer"

I love my iPhone. That said, it never ceases to amaze me that anyone with a keyboard and a gripe can become a "columnist" in this day and age.

Why did this "article" - littered with grammatical errors, mispellings, and clearly fact-inspired opinions, rank as the number one "news" story?

Something is wrong.

Personally

I don't think the truth should get in the way of neither a good story nor an apple rant.

Grow Up

Oh dear...
Was this article written by a child? I cannot believe that such rubbish would be published. This is definitely a sad Windows VS Apple forum post rather than being a newsworthy article. Please get some life experience, some experience of what you are actually dismissing and grow up!

Wait n watch..

Apple is extra safe and extra secure on their products, which can kill the innovation but at the same time for the world class products thry make, they deserve that sort of control.

Its all like economics, the apple and the market even will settle itself soon in terms of this new software distribution thing on App store.

If you can get a better product than apple, you should have gone for it, hmm !!

SO trust apple, and steve too..

They will surely ensure that their products dont see a decline atleast at this stage of their product lifecycle.

Things and people.

Nick, stop and think about what you are doing!
People do not like to be told that their latest and greatest expensive little gadget they never needed has flaws. They don't like it when you say things that makes their purchase look like a bad decision.

Please be more respectful to iEgo, it's a delicate design master-piece and a very touchy one at that.

Apple is the best company to ever grace fruit. And Steve Jobs is really out to protect us, the little people, from ourselves.

Long live iFeelings.

How Ironic

Remember that iconic Apple Mac commercial from 1984 about how Apple will release the masses from the shackles of Big Brother corporations.

Apple has turned out to be very Big Brother with their products. You can use them when, where, how Apple decided you can use the, period. Oh and here's a wack on the head if you deviate from the party line.

Does this carry over on to the iPods

The question is, "Does this function carry over on to the iPod?".
posted by : ldouglas, 12 August 2008

thinking that too

First off: I am a windows mobile user (currently running wm6.1 tweaked the wazzue running so fast and smooth it's like my phone is about to have an orgasm).
with that said:
I was thinking about this remote shut off valve, if it is hacked to be manipulated remotely (not by apple) users could find all the their programs gone.

this gives me a bad feeling: its like I bought house and the realestate company has a copy of my house keys and there's no way for me to change those keys....it would be hard for me to sleep at nights.

I honestly don't think a remote key is a good idea, it might seems like it is but when it gets hacked this would be devastating to iPhone users.

Job's Bollicks

Stevie Boy's been caught with his pants down.

If it was a "feature", Apple would have marketed it as such, at the Launch.

They tried to hide it, got found out, and made a pathetic excuse.

No doubt its so "irresponsible not to have (this feature)", every future Apple Gadget must have it else Cupertino will be subject to Class Action.

A trend in the comments?

'Basically he's wrote in his own words the same thing as the WSJ then gave his opinion on Apple having the ability to do something like this, i dont see the problem with'

The problem with this is Nick made something up out of the air, to further his own article. Being the 'journalist' (stifles laugh) he is, he attempts to use the WSJ article as support which says there 'could be'.

I don't want to split hairs here but "could be" (meaning maybe, maybe not) and "looks like" (meaning likely?) are 2 different things, and quoting an unsubstantiated opinion (which was qualified in the WSJ link) as supporting facts is comical even for a high school newspaper writer. And my apologies to HS newswriters out there for putting you in the same league as Nick. So when Nick says "looks like" what is this based on? NOTHING!

It is kind of comical what this site has become:
-Nick has Apple,
-Charlie has Nvidia
-Can we get a few writers who's main purpose in life is to flame against Intel, AMD, MS (this is kind of a tag team effort,we need a central beacon) and round this site out as a glorified blog.

Again, I urge the editors to look through the # of comments and the general theme and ask yourselves is this site heading in the write (hey it passed spellcheck, why proofread?) direction with articles like thee (again this word passed spellcheck, why bother proofreading).

Apple Fanboys are the worst

Wow, the Apple fan boys are out in full force today. Please go crawl up Steve Jobs ass and stay there.

I don't get it!

Wow, who let the fanboys out today? It's a lot of fun to see people wander into a situation, not understand the discourse, and then freak out. I hope that the Applets get equally offended at every article and every "petname." These comments are hilarious.
posted by : Owain, 12 August 2008

oh really

its like buying a supposedly "inexpensive" house that the upkeep is really really expensive, and to top it off the realestate company has a copy of the keys and you can't change the locks, and not just that but there are times late in the nights you find the realestate people you bought the house from looking for food in your house in your refrigerator! you even found them bathroom too.

Poorly written, and poor research

I can't believe how poorly written this article was. Read: "For Apple fanboys, who know that they are weak and they might stray from the true Apple roadmap, are one of he few that will be reassured to know that the Cappuccino outfit has installed a kill switch under the bonnet" for instance. WOW, you serious? I personally hate apple, but now I hate you too Nick.

More to the point: the kill switch was found on August 7th. Get your facts straight before you publish something. Noooobbb.
